As I sit here trying to come up with a good blog post topic, it occurs to me that I should write about the process. Coming up with topics is hard. There are countless topics on the internet, so how do you (or I) decide what to write about?
Brainstorming is tricky because while it can be extremely helpful it can also be very overwhelming. How do I start brainstorming so I can start thinking about starting to write? And so it spirals…
When you’re brainstorming ideas, remember the rule of improv: it only works when you say “yes, and…”. You need to build on your ideas, even if you think they’re not that good. The human brain is a crazy place and it may lead you to a great idea, if you let it.
- Consider your deliverables. In this case, a blog post.
- Consider your audience. It could be business owners, non-profits, government, etc. Just know who you’re trying to reach with your message and make sure you target them with your language and your medium.
- Finally, put some ideas on paper (or a computer, tablet, phone, whatever works for you!). Sometimes just generating a list of words related to the topic is enough to get you started.
And look! I did it. One blog post.
