Those who know me know that I’m a lifelong IABC member and champion – a member for 37 years and counting. IABC has been there for me every step of my career. When I was starting out, it was (and still is!) the best place to get information and resources on the latest trends in communication.
As organizational communication has changed, so too have the career opportunities within it. No longer a strictly linear path, the communication professional’s career now includes all kinds of twists and turns. Entry level > internal comms specialist > issues management expert > solo-preneur? Media relations assistant > event coordinator > social media guru?
What does your path look like, and where are you going?
Enter the IABC career assessment tool, a free online tool to help you assess where you are in your career and what skills and abilities you might need to develop in order to progress. This tool assesses your career development according to the six Principles of the Global Standard for the Communication Profession: Ethics, Consistency, Context, Analysis, Strategy, and Engagement.
IABC has defined four milestones in the Career Roadmap: Foundation, Generalist, Strategic Advisor, Business Leader. Although these are not necessarily meant to be a progression, each milestone outlines the skills and abilities expected of a professional at that stage in their careers.
After you complete the questions, you will get a Career Assessment Report that shows your career milestone, where you rated yourself highest and where you might choose to focus your development.
So take the free assessment and find out where you are, but more importantly, where you want to go. The sky’s the limit.
